Central Western Jabavu sector manager and Moroka Police Station senior officer Joe Lukhwareni was shot dead together with his father.
It is alleged that the suspects entered his house and without saying a word opened fire.
Police say the gunmen shot Lukhwareni’s father first before shooting the police officer in his room.
The station’s communications officer John Serala said: “This is a great loss to society and SAPS as a whole.
“We have lost a man who dedicated his life and time in the fight against crime and safety of the people, what I can say is that we have started a search campaign for the suspects who were last seen entering the house and soon we will arrest them and let the law take its course.”
Serala said more information relating to the memorial service and burial will be given out soon.
