DA visits Soweto schools

The visits were scheduled to assess school readiness and operations in schools.

The Democratic Alliance conducted school visits in Meadowlands and Dobsonville to assess school readiness.

Primary schools Morutathoto and Rebongwe are some of the schools that were graced by the presence of DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Education, Khume Ramulifho, Alan Fuchs for Infrastructure Development and DA Councillor Rabelani Dagada yesterday.

The visits are set to assess school nutrition schemes, infrastructure, school safety, availability of Learner Teacher Support Materials and support from the department.

“There are several challenges that need urgent attendance,” said Ramulifho, “We have forwarded these to the MEC who promised to look at the list and send his team to address them”.

Classroom overcrowding (where the teacher pupil ratio is 1:60 instead of 1:40 as required by law) and inadequate tables and chairs are some of the challenges noted during the visits.

He raised concern over the possible closing down of Thakisa Primary School in Meadowlands due to pupil capacity deteriorating over the years. The school apparently has less than 200 pupils attending.

Ramulifho said more visits will be conducted next week in other areas of Soweto.

Morutathoto pupils are delighted as their new learning resources are provided to them.
