NPA and doj&cd commemorate 16 Days of Activism

Community urged to fight against abuse.

The National Prosecuting Authority and Department of Justice and Constitutional Development held an event to raise awareness to act against abuse during the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children abuse.

The event took place on December 3 at Protea Glen Magistrate Court where the MMC of City of Johannesburg, Nonceba Molwele, South Gauteng Director of Public Prosecutions, Andrew Chauke, Community Development MMC Chris Vondo and the Director Legal of Department of Justice attended.

The purpose of the event was to raise awareness for non-violence against women and children.

Wendy Phaluma from POWA spoke about the cycle of abuse.

She said that abuse is a pattern, it doesn’t stop and because women are emotional beings by nature, that is why most usually go back to their lovers who abused them because of the soft spot they have for them.

City of Johannesburg MMC, Nonceba Molwele said that it is important for the community to look at their morals and mental fitness when it comes to abuse.

“We must recommit ourselves to come up with a solution on how to end violence.

“We have been commemorating 16 Days of Activism but within these 16 days more women are raped and killed and more children become victims,” said Molwele.

She also said that it is important for everyone to be an advocate of 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children abuse and it shouldn’t only be during these 16 days but 365 days.
