Hospital’s faulty air-cons halt C-sections

Jack Bloom, DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health says Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development has failed patients and hospital staff.

Caesarean sections have been halted today at the Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital after air-conditioning units failed in the operating theatres according to Jack Bloom, DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Health

All ambulances have been directed to other hospitals while the problem is sorted out.

Virgina Nkosi, nurse at the hospital says that C-sections have be stopped at the hospital and they have been instructed to only operate on emergencies.

“We have stopped doing C-sections at the hospital due to air-condition not working,” says Nkosi.

This is disruptive and distressing for both patients and staff of the hospital.

Bloom has slammed the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development for not maintaining air-conditions.

‘Yet again there has been a failure of preventive maintenance by the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development.

If it’s not one thing, it’s another thing as surgeons in hospitals around Gauteng never know whether they will be able to do their daily scheduled operations, according to Bloom.

“It would be better for hospitals to control all maintenance directly rather than be let down frequently by this hopeless department which needs an urgent overhaul to improve its effectiveness,” said Bloom.
