Turning disadvantages into business

Ekukhanyeni in Zola sustains the disadvantaged and helps them make money.

Ekukhanyeni Organisation for the Mentally Challenged from Zola North produce vegetables and artwork which they sell to the public.

Members of the non profit organisation say they specialise in bead work which they sell to the public in order to remain sustained.

Gloria Belema is the head of the organisation and she says that she manages about 15 individuals with different types of disabilities and teaches them skills which include artwork and farming.

Belema says that the organisation has grown and assists its beneficiaries by providing them with vegetables during the day and some which they take home.

She adds that the money made from the artwork goes directly to the people who made the material, in that way they can learn basic principles on sustaining themselves.

Belema also appeals to the corporate world and businessmen within the community to assist the organisation in working material and donations, in order for the organisation to grow as she intends on accommodating more beneficiaries next year and in the future.
