Taxi associations take over Joburg public transportation

Taxi strike disrupts roads and bus routes.

Commuters were forced to use alternative transportation on November 17 following a go-slow by taxi association drivers.

The march is said to have been sparked by several issues, including the Rea Vaya bus system and miscommunication by government officials to amendments regarding e-tolls and registration of permits for taxis that replaced scrap taxis as part of the department of transport campaign to ensure safe public transport.

In preparation for the march scheduled to take place from Newtown, taxi drivers caused disruption on roads and bus routes, even going as far as offloading passengers in private cars around some parts of Soweto to get their message across.

An army of Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) together with South African Police Services had to escort drivers and buses while monitoring the behaviour of protesters who carried sjamboks and other objects as part of their march.

No injuries or deaths had been reported at the time of print.
