Supervise children this festive season

Moroka police urge parents to keep an eye on their children to avoid the increase of missing children.

As the festive season approaches, the Moroka police are urging parents to make sure that their children are always under adult supervision to avoid them going missing.

The police say that should a child go missing, they should be reported at the police station as soon as possible.

Communications officer of the Moroka Police Station, John Serala, said: “We plead with the families always to check on their children, especially if they are out of the yard.

“Should you suspect a child has gone missing, look out for them at their usual playing spots and try to find out information from neighbours and friends.

“If that fails, rush to the police station with a recent picture of the child and as much information as possible about them.”

Serala said below is a list of things to take note off when opening a missing child’s case:

· Have accurate information about the child you are looking for.

· Go to the police station with the latest photograph of the child.

· Know what your children are wearing when they leave the house daily.

· Know their whereabouts daily.

· Teach your children their names and surnames, home addresses, your name and contact numbers.

“We ask for families to update their pictures regularly, especially photos of children because over time they grow and change and if the photo is not updated it makes it harder to find them.

“Before opening a missing person’s case, we will do a preliminary investigation to look out for them, but should we be unable to find them then a missing person’s case will be opened.”
