Gauteng taxis go on strike

Commuters left stranded due to no taxi strike.

Thousands of commuters remained stranded on Monday morning as there were no taxis to be seen.

As an alternative, passengers flooded buses and trains hoping to make it to work and school on time.

Public relations officer of the Nancefield Dube West Taxi Owner Association, Joseph Ngcobo, says the strike was due to the taxi industry being unhappy with its current relations with the government.

“We have a lot of issues with our government and the way they are treating us.

“One of the issues that have resulted in this strike include having no permits for our taxis. Our cars get impounded and then we are expected to pay thousands to get them back, yet our officials are the ones that are not addressing our permit issues which we have been complaining about for years,” Ngobo says.

He says that they would be handing over a memorandum with a list of their issues to the relevant department and they hope that their grievances will be heard.

Taxis are expected to be back on the roads by tomorrow.
