Pupil dies en route to school

Six-year-old Nia Jone declared dead on the scene.

A 27-year-old man was arrested on Wednesday for culpable homicide after he bumped six-year-old Nia Jones while crossing the street on her way to school.

“It is alleged that the suspect was driving at corner Mahony and Kierpersol Streets when this incident happened.

“The victim was crossing the street when she was knocked down by a white VW Station Wagon,” Captain Phillemon Khorombi said.

The girl was certified dead on the scene.

“This is a great loss for the school, we are very sad,” a teacher from Elridge Primary School said.

The driver didn’t have a licence and the vehicle he was driving was not roadworthy without a licence disk.

The man is detained at the Eldorado Park Police Station holding cells.

A memorial service will be held by the school on Friday morning.
