Getting men talking to address women and children abuse

The Lungelo Women’s Organisation believes men need to be included if violence against women and children is to stop.

After five years of running a programme focusing on men’s issues but having minimal response, the Lungelo Women’s Organisation based in Dube, is inviting more men to join their ‘Abonumzane Abaqotho Programme’.

This is a programme catering for men to meet weekly on Thursday to voice out their opinions on social and personal issues they are facing.

According to the organisation, they started this programme in 2009 to attend to men’s needs and to get them talking after seeing that the government is focused mostly on women and forgets about them.

“Our service is targeted at men, with the aim of challenging and changing their attitudes, values and behaviour regarding violence against women and children.

“This is done through dialogues and workshops where our men are given a platform to share and speak about their experience and perceptions about domestic and sexual violence,” said project coordinator Connie Mahange.

She said the nation needs to involve men if they want a stop to violence.

Facilitator of the programme, Emile Modisaesi said: “At these talks we provide men with workshops that help them on personal growth.

“The organisation also looks at grooming young boys so that they can grow to be positive role models in their communities.

“We would like to have more men involved in this dialogue, so we can promote more positive fathers and men in our societies.”
