Cycle paths launched in Orlando

Residents can now cycle freely and safely on a designated cycle lane.

The National Department of Environmental Affairs in partnership with the City of Johannesburg officially launched the Orlando Cycle Paths and Complete Streets yesterday.

The project is aimed at making the City a cycle friendly City, give residents an alternative to private cars ,reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote renewable energy sources and facilitate broad climate change awareness.

The 5km of walking and cycling paths in Orlando route connects schools to residential areas as well as schools and residents to facilities such as the Orlando Stadium and the police station as well as Rea Vaya BRT and Metrorail stations.

The Mayor of Johannesburg Parks Tau who was at the launch said that the Orlando which we see today is different from the Orlando of five years ago.

Tau said that cycling is a great way to stay healthy and fit.

“This is progress to create consciousness on how we can take care of ourselves and our bodies.  This project will promote non- motorised transportation,” he said.
