Nine people were arrested on October 17 for alleged cable theft near the Meadowlands Hostel in Zone Three.
The suspects, aged between 16 and 39 years were handed over to the police by City Power investigators.
Spokesperson for the police, Sibusiso Chauke said the investigators were observing a place in Zone 11 where cable theft recently took place when they suddenly spotted a group of men carrying garden spades and hammers.
Unaware of investigators, the suspects began to dig and steal the cables.
Investigators approached the group and managed to capture nine of the suspects while one man fled the scene.
Cables worth thousands of rands were seized and investigations continue as the City reported that millions have been lost to cable theft in recent years.
City Power couldn’t be reached for comment.
