‘Negligence has ended innocent lives’

DA saddened by boys' deaths and convey its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.

DA PR councillor Hilton Masera says the party is saddened by the death of two children aged seven in Bramfischerville who were killed while playing on concrete pipes meant for storm water drainage system in Ward 44.

It is said that the children were rolled over by the pipes allegedly delivered by a construction company and were certified dead on the scene.

Apparently the company which was appointed by the City of Johannesburg Municipality, delivered the heavy duty concrete pipes last week Friday, October 17 near Siyabonga Secondary School.

Masera who was among the first people on the scene says no barricades nor any other security measures were put in place, despite the fact that the material was delivered outside Siyabonga Secondary School perimeter fence and opposite a pre-school where children as young as five-years-old can access the pipes.

“The DA is saddened by the deaths that could have been avoided and conveys its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” he said.

He said: “We believe that the company should answer for this unfortunate incident.”

Masera says they also call for the company to place the heavy duty concrete pipes at the construction site camp until taken out for use or barricade them to prevent children from easily accessing the pipes.
