Shoprite supports World Food Day

Since 2007 Shoprite’s fleet of Mobile Soup Kitchens have served over 19 million cups of soup to people living in dire circumstances

In support of World Food Day, Shoprite deployed its fleet of Mobile Soup Kitchen to serve a nutritious portion of Royco soup and Albany bread to Ipolokeng Primary School.

Since launching its feeding programme in 2007, Shoprite’s fleet of Mobile Soup Kitchens have served over 19 million cups of soup to people living in dire circumstances and those who are victims of natural disasters.

As a responsible corporate citizen, the Shoprite Group not only continuously strives to make food accessible at the lowest prices to cash strapped consumers, but also to make a difference in the lives of large numbers of people who are suffering as a result of food insecurity (not having physical & economic access to adequate amounts of nutritious and safe foods) on a daily basis.

The supermarket group is aware of the on-going economic pressures experienced by most South Africans, especially in unprivileged communities and believes that the Mobile Soup Kitchens don’t offer a cup of soup, but provides a meal of hope.

“We are happy that Shoprite decided to visit our school because our pupils are used to the food provided by the school feeding scheme and acts as a change of menu for the pupils,” said school principal Pinkie Buthelezi.

“We are sometimes unable to feed all pupils, therefore this acts as a substitute for that meal.

“The best thing is that even teachers eat the food. Leftovers are given to the school, which we give to needy households.”

Buthelezi said on behalf of the school, she would like to thank Shoprite for always considering them and feeding their pupils nutritious meals.
