Making sure no one goes to bed hungry

Families falling under the African Children’s Feeding Scheme are provided with a meal daily.

In celebration of World Food Day yesterday, the African Children’s Feeding Scheme (ACFS) ‘Malebese’ in Jabavu conducted an informative day and distributing of food to the impoverished families that they serve in the community.

The residents were educated on food groups and nutrition and there was planting of vegetables at the main garden of the centre which served as a message to the community on the role that can be played by them in preventing hunger.

Children were then given their daily bread with peanut butter and a glass of milk while the families that rely on the centre for food donations were given food parcels.

Executive Director at ACFS, Phindile Hlalele said: “Thanks to Albany’s bread donation, daily we are able to feed 2 700 children in the Jabavu centre.

“These children are either from impoverished families, child headed families, those who are infected and affect by HIV/Aids and those whose parents don’t work among other reasons.

“We also don’t just focus on the child, but make sure that we admit the entire family into our centre to help them with food and skills development and then when they can stand on their own feet, we discharge them from our programmes and take on other needy families.”

The centre has a vegetable food garden that assists in feeding of the families which is a donation made possible by WesBank and Deloitte.

Tiger Brands then assists with perishable food donations that make it possible for the centre to provide food parcels that are donated to the families monthly, ensuring that no one in these families goes to bed hungry.
