‘He doesn’t normally drive on that route’- father

45-year-old Virgil Standler from Eldorado Park was one of the motorists critically injured in the accident that occurred on the N12 east yesterday.

Sitting in his Eldorado Park home and surrounded by family, a calm Robert Standler, father said: “He does not normally drive on that route on his way to work at Joburg Gen (Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital)but his boss had suggested another route.

“You never think that your loved ones may be in an accident reported in the media.”

The single father of three lived at home with his parents.

The truck driver who ploughed into the over 40 cars on the road is not to blame said Standler’s father.

“I am a long distance truck driver, I would not wish any more pain on their family. I just wish we had more experienced drivers on the road. A truck is a killer if it isn’t driven properly,” he said.

The tragic accident has claimed four lives but authorities are expecting that number to increase.
