City of Johannesburg ready to fight rodents

R2.5 million will be used to get rid of rodents in Johannesburg.

The City of Johannesburg has set aside R2.5 million in its 2014/2015 financial year which is to be spent in the fight against rodents.

This was an announcement made by Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development, Councillor Nonceba Molwele yesterday.

According to Molwele, there has been development of an Integrated Rodent Management Programme strategy to fight against the infestation of rodents in all of Johannesburg.

“The aim of this initiative is to be proactive and preventative.

“It will also serve as an environmentally based system in which all available techniques are evaluated and combined into a unified programme to manage pest populations so that economic damage is avoided and unfriendly effects on the environment are minimised,” she said.

Molwele said that there further needs to be an improvement on cleanliness and on general hygiene matters which included sanitation, correct management of household waste, eliminating of litter, having general cleanliness of the environment, eliminate waste water and have correct storage of food.
