Freedom Park Secondary School opening

A school will be opened every week in Gauteng, until February.

Premier David Makhura officially opened Freedom Park Secondary School last Thursday.

The school which can accommodate over 1100 pupils cost R57 million and is classified as a state of the art school.

It has 25 classrooms, three laboratories, a computer room, a library, a sports facility building, soccer and rugby grounds, combination courts for netball, tennis and basketball and a canteen.

A symbolic handover of keys from MEC of Infrastructure Nandi Mayathula-Khoza to MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi was done.

“Today (Thursday) we are bringing dignity to the children of Freedom Park,” Mayathula-Khoza said.

Lesufi said bringing schools closer to children is safer.

“We want every child to go to proper schools and we are proud that schools are now converting to schools of the future. Gone are the days of blackboards and chalk dusters,” Lesufi said.

He said that each child will get an Ipad while every teacher will be equipped with a laptop.

Makhura asked the community to take care of their new school and use it to create a vibrant economy.

“Use this school to create more jobs, the bread that the children will eat must come from bakers in this community. Everything that the school will use must be locally produced,” Makhura said.

Siyabonga Buthelezi, principal of the school said he is thankful for the state of the art school and is looking forward to graduating their first matriculants in 2016.
