Police minister says he is worried about the spike in crimes against women and children.

Crime statistics are expected to be released next month, police minister Nkosinathi Nhleko says he is particularly concerned about the high number of crimes against women and children in Gauteng.

Nhleko visited the police’s provincial headquarters in Johannesburg.

The minister says too many women and children in the province are becoming victims of crime.

“We have more contact crimes being conducted against the vulnerable groups in our society,” said Nhleko.

Nhleko has urged communities to work together with police to protect the vulnerable.

“Assisting the work of the police in ensuring that we create conditions of safety in communities where we live.”

The minister has also encouraged community policing forums to continue their work, adding they’re playing a role in fighting crime in Gauteng.
