‘Councillor must go’- Riverlea Ext residents

Day three into the protest for the removal of ward councillor.

The Gauteng Department of Education has expressed their concerns over the ongoing protest in Riverlea.

In a statement released by the GDE says: “It is of extreme concern to us, that when communities engage in protest actions, schools become targets resulting in pupils losing valuable time.”

School pupils have stayed at home to join in on the protest.

The protest was sparked after the ward councillor, Lynette Pretorius had resident charged with intimidation.

Residents have said that the councillor has done nothing for them.

Motorist that use Nasrec Road should find alternative routes as residents say they will continue to blockade the road until Pretorius is removed from office.

“We are shutting this road (Nasrec) down today again,” pupils shouted at motorists that were passing by.

“At this stage we would like to make an appeal to community leaders to assist the department in stabilising schools in the areas and ensure that the future of young pupils is not placed in jeopardy,” said the GDE.
