Prelims to start soon

The Department of Basic Education wishes Grade 12 pupils luck for upcoming preliminary examinations.

It is that time of the year again where the county counts down as preliminary examinations for matrics are set to start soon.

This year’s exams will commence on September 3 and will end on September 23.

The Department of Basic Education has said that these dates are however, only for common papers set by them which and it does not include dates of examinations set out by individual schools.

Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson, Phumla Sekhonyane said that their department has been working hard from the beginning of the year to ensure that pupils are ready for these examinations.

She said: “One of the key programmes aimed at ensuring that our pupils perform well, especially in township and rural schools, is the United Nations Winning Programme, the Secondary School Improvement Programme (SSIP). This is where our matriculants benefit from additional support materials and extra classes on weekends and during school holidays.”

She said the SSIP has played a major role in the positive improvement of the 2013 matric results, mainly in many township priority schools.

“So we are confident that the Class of 2014 will again perform well due to efforts made by the department in preparing them for these examinations,” she said.

Sekhonyane said as the department, they wish all Grade 12 pupils of this year all the best of luck during these preliminary examinations.
