Four arrested for cable theft

18m of cable and other cable supplies recovered by police.

To curb the spread of cable theft in Soweto, Kliptown Police recently arrested four suspects.

“When we were patrolling the streets, we came across people that were digging near a power station. These people were then asked to identify themselves as Eskom officials, but they couldn’t. They were then arrested for allegedly stealing cables,” said Kliptown Police, spokesperson, Thuli Ngwenya.

“This is a major breakthrough in the battle against cable theft and illegal connections in a time when Soweto is particularly plagued by outages caused by these crimes,” said Lerato Nkosi, from Eskom.

She said what is of further significance is that these arrests took place during Eskom’s Public Safety Week, where residents  are made aware of the dangers of electricity theft, meter tampering and illegal connections.

“They are also being educated about the safe and efficient use of electricity,” she said.
