Rape cases raise concern for police

Moroka Police ask women to be more careful.

With the high increase in rape cases being reported in the area and country, the Moroka police are asking residence to be more careful and to come forward to report such cases.

The police are also warning residents to stop opening cases and then days later, going to the police station and asking to withdraw them.

Communications officer of Moroka, Constable John Serala said that it is disturbing seeing the amount of violence taking place against women and children which is why they have decided to create awareness on the matter.

He said: “Last week we had an incident where a teacher from the Moroka policing area came and opened a rape case for a teenage girl. The pupil was allegedly raped by her mother’s boyfriend. When the mother found out about this, she visited the police station and requested for the case to be withdrawn.”

Serala said that they are pleading and also warning residents to not open cases and then withdraw them because if something bad happens to the victim, they will be to blame and will be questioned on what they did after the incident was reported.

He said residents must know that it is only the magistrate that can withdraw a case.
