Not paying child support will cripple your credit record

Child maintenance defaulters to face tough times.

If you have been dodging the system of paying child maintenance, your days might be numbered.

This comes after the National Credit Regulator (NCR) has announced that new affordability rules for the credit industry have been put in place to deal with those parents who have been running from paying child support for their offspring.

Through this task, the NCR hopes to make all parents face up to their responsibilities.

The draft regulations states that:

• Maintenance defaults will stay on a person’s credit record for five years or until the court withdraws the default judgment.
• Maintenance payments will be included in all affordability assessments completed when applying for new loans.
• Clients are required to declare if they have any maintenance default judgments.

The public have been given 30 days to comment on the amended legislation.
