A mother’s toilet visit ends in tragedy

Four-month-old baby dies in fire.

A mother’s worst nightmare became a reality as her four-month-old baby girl died after their house caught fire yesterday.

The incident took place at the Meadowlands Zone 11 hostel while the mother had gone out to use the public toilet not too far away from their home.

According to police’s Kay Makhubela, the mother had left the baby sleeping and at that time she was with her older brother of four-years-old.

The house then caught fire and the boy ran out to go find their mother, but when they returned it was too late as the baby had caught fire and burnt to death.

Makhubela said: “At the moment, we cannot confirm the cause of the fire, but a case of inquest has been open. We will investigate further and depending on our findings, the mother might later be charged with culpable homicide.”
