96 bags of drugs discovered at Awela Park

Police arrest suspected drug lord.

Chiawelo based Awela Park is allegedly being used as a drug den and residents claim that drug lords operate their shady business at this community recreation facility.

During their weekly routine check-up at the park, Moroka Police Station officers arrested a suspected drug lord and during a thorough search they discovered 96 bags of drugs.

Police officer Eric Mokoena said they will continue with their check-ups at that particular park.

“This is now going to be our first priority area in terms of our patrol and random searches, we can’t have people destroying the future and lives of our children while we are here.

“We are going to work extra hard and make sure that whoever is involved in any illegal activity here is heavily punished.”

One of the parents next the part Nancy Mugwena said: “What is happening here at the park during the day and at night is a total disgrace.

“Young people come here in their school uniform and drink alcohol, smoke dagga and drugs and some have sex here in the evening and we can’t just approach and reprimand them.”

Another parent Martha Hlongwane said: “I’ve witnessed two incidents here at the park, one was two young people fighting and the other one ended up being stabbed and the other one was of a drunk young girl who was being forced to strip naked by other young boys.

“Luckily some men from our area did managed to go and rescue the girl and if things like this happens now, what’s going to happen next, people raped or dying? This must be solved now.”
