DA condemns damage to city facility

DA encourages peaceful protests by residents.

DA spokesperson on Community Development in the City of Johannesburg municipality, Nonhlanhla Sifumba said the recent vandalism of Kopanong Hall during community unrest in Dobsonville was uncalled for.

Sifumba said the DA condemns violent behaviour by the community during service delivery protests.

The vandalism of city facilities in Dobsonville was sparked by power outages.

“We acknowledge the right of the community to protest, but we would like to encourage peaceful protests and condemn violent ones,” she said.

Sifumba said: “We would like to appeal to the community to soothe and deal with the current situation in a manner that will not put their area and well-being in danger.”

She said that this is their home (community), their sanctuary and as such, it must be treated in a befitting manner.

Sifumba said the DA also calls on to the ANC-led city of Johannesburg, its power agency, City Power and Eskom to do their utmost best to deal with the situation amicably.

“Keep community informed at all times, so that communities are on the same page as they are,” said Sifumba.
