No fee schools set for improvement

No child will be disadvantaged because of their economic situation.

Basic Education Minister, Angie Motshekga, announced that R8 billion is included in the five year plan to specifically improve education in schools that do not pay fees.

“We will ensure that no child is disadvantaged because of their economic situation,” said Motshekga in a statement.

Motshekga said that her department will make more changes and appropriate interventions to turn the education system around.

This includes removing mud schools and other unfitting structures, especially in the Eastern Cape.

She said her department will track learner performance more closely, in order to ensure that interventions are working and that there is a decrease in the drop-out rate and increase in retention levels in schools.

The no fee schools will also benefit from an increased budget as well as various school nutrition programmes.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, yesterday.
