Helen Joseph Hospital in crisis

DA Shadow MEC for health has a great concern over Helen Joseph Hospital and the lack of maintenance.

Reports of a hospital in disarray have left a mother having to wait for eight hours before going for a liver operation.

“Surgery has been drastically curtailed at the Helen Joseph Hospital in west Johannesburg due to a variety of equipment failures, including lack of oxygen and broken lifts,” says Jack Bloom, DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for health.

He alleges that due to the leaking roof that was reported earlier this year it has left patients with cancelled surgeries.

He said patients have to wait months for procedures that in the past were offered daily.

According to Bloom, staff cope as best they can, but the infrastructure breakdown is just too overwhelming.

“Urgent intervention is needed to rehabilitate this hospital before conditions become totally unbearable,” said Bloom
