Bookworm competition encourages pupils to read

Pimville primary schools read up on African heroes.

Seven primary schools in Pimville namely; Tshebedisano, Nkholi, Pimville, Leihlo, Paul Mosaka and Khandubuhle pupils celebrated Youth Month with a bookworm competition.

Thembu Primary School hosted all seven schools on the day.

“We realised that the level of reading among our pupils was getting low and to celebrate this important month, we held the competition. We identified African heroes and pupils had to read about those heroes,” said Maureen Makhutle, a teacher at Nkholi Primary School.

Makutle said the day was a successful event as pupils showcased their love for reading and their ability towards their comprehensive skills.

“The crowd was entertained by gumboot dancers who told a story about the IsiXhosa tribe,” she said.
