Concern for residents' safety at bridge

People should be on the lookout for criminals.

Deputy secretary of the Branch Executive Committee and zonal member in Ward 44, Patricia Mothata said crime continues to occur at a bridge in Bramfischerville Phase One.

The bridge is situated between Sasol garage and the Roodeport Cemetery.

It is the crossing residents and commuters are likely to use when traveling to work and going to the shopping mall.

Mothata said criminals rob people of their personal belongings during late hours when they return from work.

She alleges that criminals hide under the bridge during dark hours and wait for people to pass before they could act.

“It is hard to see what’s under the bridge,” said Mothata.

She suggested that it be closed off underneath so people cannot not reach the bottom.

Mothata said this would allow people to cross with ease.

She made this proposition during a clean-up campaign held a week ago.

Mothata said she will speak to the councillor about the matter.

Dobsonville Police communications officer constable Mzwakhe Xazi said people who use the cemetery as a shortcut should be on the lookout for armed criminals.

Xazi confirmed that there were cases that had been opened, cases of crimes that happened at the bridge and inside the cemetery.
