‘Be a responsible road user’

GTP gears up for yet another long weekend traffic.

Drivers are warned of heavy traffic volumes expected tomorrow on major routes due to schools closing for a week and also freedom day long weekend.

The following freeways are expected to be busy from Gauteng: N1 north to Limpopo, N3 south to Kzn and N4 east to Mpumalanga.

“We urge drivers to be responsible on the roads/freeways and to be considerate towards other road users especially pedestrians,” said Obed Sibasa, Gauteng Traffic Police (GTP).

He urged motorists to be extra careful around children and pedestrians.

Some safety tips if you traveling:
• Don’t drink and drive,
• Don’t Speed,
• Don’t text and drive,
• Buckle Up, all in the car even when travelling short distance,
• Take regular rest breaks every 200 km/s or 2 hours to avoid fatigue,
• Check and service your vehicle before travelling long distance
• Children especially girls MUST avoid isolated areas, they might be victims of rape.

GTP advises on the following:
• We warn Road users especially Children
• Not to Jay-walk,
• Not to text and walk and
• Not to walk with head phones, as you will not hear cars approaching.
• Pedestrians must avoid walking on the road but to walk on the pavement facing oncoming traffic.
• Not to cross the road carelessly, to look and listen before they cross if not they might be knocked by vehicles. Most accidents involving Junior Pedestrians occur when they are on school holidays.
• Parents should monitor movements of their children, ensure strict parental supervision
• We also warn Pedestrians not to walk along or cross freeways, hitch hike on highways.
• Public transport operators/drivers to refrain from dropping off Passengers / Pedestrians on freeways. It is not only dangerous but illegal and fatal.
• PEDESTRIANS FOUND TO BE ON FREEWAYS WILL BE ARRESTED.
• Gauteng Traffic Police will be monitoring all major routes/freeways (National, Provincial and Municipal roads)
• Their objective is to curb fatal crashes, carnages and Pedestrian fatalities on Gauteng’s roads.

“We will not hesitate to arrest law breakers and traffic offenders.
“Road safety starts with you, be a responsible road user, said Sibasa.
