Dobsie Heritage Foundation says it’s planning on submitting a petition to the City of Joburg proposing the renaming of
Main Road in Dobsonville to Dr Mary Malahlela Road.
The foundation also wants the park next to Borage Shopping Centre opposite Kopanong Hall to change to Dr Mary Malahlela Park.
The petition will be distributed around the community for signatures.
“This is in line with our resolve to acknowledge and celebrate the fact that Dr Malahlela was the first African woman in South Africa to qualify as a medical practitioner,” said foundation secretary, Motsomi Mokhine.
Mokhine said it is also part of their quest to honour and pay homage to the iconic and heroic role played by Dr Malahlela in the community.
The petition will be submitted before the end of September.
