Will Zone 11 flats ever have occupants?

Flats unoccupied six years down the line.

Meadowlands Zone 11 flats are still not occupied, six years after being built.

There are several issues that are of concern and have proven to be difficult to resolve for years.

Residents at the hostel (opposite the flats) have over the years asked the question, who is going to move into the flats?

IFP councillor, Theodore Dhlamini said the communication about the project was not clear from the start.

“Residents who live at the hostel would be allocated into the units, the story changed and they were told they would have to pay and that anyone outside the hostel can be allocated into the units,” he said.

The hostel is occupied by thousands of people while the units are not more than 200.

This is particularly challenging, residents have been protesting for housing and better living conditions.

Dhlamini said the quality of work inside the flats is questionable.

From the outside, the flats look perfect when inside residents have seen otherwise.

“There are a lot of problems and issues about these flats, I don’t know how they will be resolved,” Dhlamini said.

Several windows have been broken.
