‘Illegal’ BRT strike taken to court

Piotrans say drivers demands can be negotiated.

Drivers for the Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system have since Monday embarked on a strike.

The matter will now be heard in court says Piotrans spokesperson Dumisani Mntambo.

“Since the meeting held yesterday, some demands have been met but others not.

“The strike is illegal and because of that it will now go to court,” he said.

Drivers are, according to Mntambo, demanding an increase in meeting times allocated to them and representation from unions and not shop stewards.

An hour and 30 minutes is allocated for meeting times, drivers are demanding for the time to increase to two hours.

“We do not have a problem with giving them two hours but if they want changes, we must sit down and negotiate, they cannot make demands,” Mntambo said.

Drivers want a shop steward and a representative from a union to represent them.

“In terms of the agreement signed by them, an employee must be represented by a shop steward.

“If a shop steward cannot stand as representation, only then will someone from the union represent them,” said Mntambo.

The demands brought forward by strikers are regulated by a binding agreement that cannot be changed, it must be negotiated upon.

“We are hoping that the interdict will be successful tomorrow and the strike will come to an end,” Mntambo said.
