Programmes launched to fight social ills

The fight against drugs continues with programmes for youth, families and parents.

The Department of Social Development launched four new programmes on Thursday.

These interventions are part of the ongoing fight against substance abuse.

Buses will now be seen around Eldos and neighbouring townships to give easy access to parents and youth for counseling.

The bus will be manned by social workers between 8am and 10pm.

A parenting programme will also be introduced which targets 1500 parents.

This programme is introduced to strengthen the bond between parents and children and to ensure that parents are more involved in the lives of their children.

The Bright Star Programme targets youth and their families and will be conducted from three different sites – Eldomaine Primary School, Willow Crescent High School and Mount Carmel Church.

The programme is made to empower youth with skills to be able to cope with the pressures from their environment.

It is a programme that will help youth discover their purpose and make the right choices.

Phase one of the programme will help ex-addicts adapt to an environment that was previously their lifestyle while phase two will focus on skills development.

The department will also be removing graffiti that sends negative messages.

These will be replaced by positive messages that will educate and motivate.

Addicted 4 Change, that was launched recently, are another of the programmes that has commenced in the hope of keeping youth active and off the streets.
