Organisations and their responsibilities

Local organisations outline responsibilities.

Substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking is a global phenomenon, and South Africa is no exception.

The Department of Social Development has established the Local Drug Action Committees(LDAC) in communities that are affected with the scourge of drugs.

The different organisations involved in the Westbury and Riverlea LDAC area and their responsibilities are:-

· SANCA :After care, rehabilitation and group work-

· Together Action Group (TAG): Prevention services for example after classes for kids and assisting with home work so that children are not on the streets after school. Work in collaboration with the taxi industry to identify hotspots. Implement diversion program-

· Sophiatown Police Services: Identification of hotspots and referrals for services count-

· Westbury Sports Academy: Facilitate the participation of Young people in various sports activities as an alternative to substance abuse. Focus on young people in ‘and out of school and those who have turned around their lives-

· Women Against Child and Drug Abuse: Identification of hotspots and substance abuse preventative services-

· Environlutions Business Support Organisation: skill development as an alternative to substance abuse-

· Community Care Foundation: Harm reduction through counselling and referrals to Rehabilitation centres for treatment/ detoxification-

· Abraham Kriel Child and Family Care :Prevention services for both children parents and their families-

· Kofifi FM: Social Media support-

· Ward Governance : Support services and community mobilisation for massive awareness and involvement in drug/substance abuse reduction-

· SANCO: Support services and community mobilisation for massive awareness and involvement in drug/substance abuse reduction-

· Representative from Churches: spiritual support and involvement in church activities as an alternative to substance abuse-

· Representative from schools forum: Assist the work with schools involvement in addressing substance abuse-

· Representative from the Taxi Industry: Identification of Hotspots-

· Health Department: Promoting healthy life style and encouraging involvement in physical activities/exercises as an alternative to substance abuse-

· JMPD: Identification of hotspots, drug raids and testing-

· SAPS: Identification of hotspots, drug raids and testing-

· Social Development: Family preservation and support groups with affected families.
