Exchange students create garden project

German students start food garden at Noordgesig Primary.

Exchang students from Germany visiting Orlando East as part of the Plan Act initiative created a garden project at Noordesig Primary School along with the pupils of Noordgesig Primary,

The project comprises two gardening plots.

Plan Act is an initiative that uses students from around the world to make a difference in other countries.

“The food garden is a role model for improving the community’s food security and to encourage the wider community to participate, learn and cultivate food themselves.

The Important part of the project is the reaching out to the community with the parents being active in the gardening together with pupils and teachers,” said Maria Christou.

To ensure an on-going process of the vegetable garden and food awareness programme at the Noordgesig Primary School a garden committee has been formed by the school teachers, general assistance members of the school and parents.

The committee’s role is to ensure that the maintenance and organising of the garden, the scheduling of the gardening programme for the pupils as part of their curriculum and the managing of the school’s kitchen.

“Urban agricultural activity is proposed to become an integrated part of the school’s curriculum to raise understanding and awareness of the natural cycles of the school garden and encourage a sense of ownership and responsibility of the pupils, teachers and parents and the broader community,” said Christou.
