Relocation of Zamimpilo residents

400 families are targeted to move to a location in Fleurhof.

The Department of Human Settlements says it plans to demolish the Zamimpilo Informal Settlement on the Westrand, after residents are relocated to a new housing development.

“The Zamimpilo relocation is part of the programme we have as the Department of Housing to deal with informal settlements and provide housing opportunities to the residents of the City of Joburg.

The department says it has to avoid reoccupation of the land,” said Bubu Xuba, communication officer for the Department of Housing.

600 families currently staying next to Riverlea, west of Johannesburg are to be relocated to the new mixed income housing development of Fleurhof on the Main Reef in two months’ time.

”As part of this programme, 600 families have been identified for relocation. 400 of these are targeted for allocation in the Fleurhof Housing Development as and when units are ready for occupation and also subject to residents qualifying for the housing subsidy,” said Xuba

Residents there were left behind when more than 1200 families were relocated to Pennyville near Soweto in 2008.

“The remaining 200 will be relocated to Slovo Park.

“The department has had numerous engagements with the community, with the MMC for Housing councillor Dan Bovu chairing recently a meeting held on 15 March 2014, addressing question and concerns raised by the residents,” said Xuba.

The Department of Human Settlement’s spokesperson Motsamai Motlhaolwa said, “The area has been riddled with criminal activity and they hope that the move will improve the lives of residents.”
