Film festival on human rights

Local film festival focuses on human rights.

The Foundation of Human Rights hosted a film festival to celebrate Human Rights Day at the Jabulani Club House last week Friday.

The film festival was focused around human rights, how to protect them and how peoples’ rights are violated.

Residents from Jabulani filled the hall and participated in film viewing, analysing the film and participating in discussions.

The discussions were aimed at having as many people as possible participate in giving their opinion about social and domestic issues.

The films viewed were examples of different forms of violation and participants who were divided into groups would discuss about the clips they viewed.

One clip was a short clip from ‘the big debate’ questioning what is being done by government to protect the rights of women.

In the clip, President Jacob Zuma was attending his rape trail and women who were Zuma supporters called the lady who laid the charges by bad names labelling her in an undermining way.

Sthembile Zuma is a facilitator for the Foundation for Human Rights and said the responses of participants were very engaging and informative.

According to her, the participants could identify that the victims’ rights were being violated and nothing was being done about it.

Zandile Mpongose was one of the participants and said that the film festival gave insight in the different ways do identify violation of human rights.

Mpongose added that more men should attend such events because these are issues that affect them directly.
