March against violation of human rights

Women from Jabulani voiced their issues to commemorate Human Rights Day.

Women from Jabulani and its surrounding areas took to the streets of on Human Rights Day to make the public aware that they’ve had enough with the violation of human rights.

With the march being dominated by women, they said the reason for the march is voice their concerns about child abuse, domestic abuse and violence, emotional abuse and manipulation and sexual offenses especially rape.

They want something to be done about the violation of their right to health, right to dignity and want to be respected for their worth in the community.

Delin Nkosi (75), was part of the march and said:

“Our younger ones don’t take care of us and they are the ones who make us suffer.

“My biggest issue and fear in the time we live in now is the rape that victimizes the elder, that just shows that things are falling apart and this is our first step to doing something about it,” Nkosi said.

The peaceful march took place from the open space behind Pace secondary school and ending their march at the Jabulani Sports club.

The women said they wanted to do the peaceful walk so that they can show people in the community that the struggle still continues even in the midst of freedom.

“People died so that we can be free but the very free people are the ones who are violating other peoples’ rights,” said Ntombzodwa Mlotshwa who was part of the crowd.

They walked around holding placards saying: ‘Stop women and child abuse’, ‘stop violating our rights’ and others saying ‘enough is enough. We also need care’.

One of the organizer of the march said that if they don’t stand their ground like they did in the apartheid era, then their rights will continue being violated.
