E-learning programme launched

88 000 tablets will be given to schools across the Gauteng province, with Grade nine pupils being the first recipients.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane and Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) MEC Barbara Creecy launched the e-learning Solution Programme at Protea Glen Secondary School, last Thursday.

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said in the programme, each school will get 40 tablets which are being installed with a GDE Portal which has curriculum material based on CAPS and workbooks.

“88 000 tablets will be given to schools across the Gauteng province which the first e-learning tools recipients are for Grade nine pupils.

“These tablets will build confident to pupils and it will also improve school management in the classrooms.

“With these tablets, pupils will be able to explore, do research, investigate and they will also have access to internet for their work at school,” she said.

Mokonyane said these tablets only works inside the school, but if it happens to be stolen they will never be able to work outside the school premises.

“The project is started in Phase-one and Phase-two will be done after we have finished all the schools in Phase-one.

“This shows that the system of education is also improving in local schools and I do not see the reason why pupils have to be taken to model-c schools,” she said.

MEC Barbara Creecy the roll-out of the e-Learning Solution has been prioritised for Grades four to nine and for english and mathematics subject offerings.

“The project will have a significant impact on the delivery of quality and equitable education in Gauteng.

“The e-Learning will be roll-out to other schools in Gauteng but we first chose Gauteng South, then it will go to Gauteng North until we reach out to all the Gauteng School,” she said.

Protea Glen Secondary School principal Joseph Mabaso said with the e-Learning Solution, they will be able to provide good marks at the end of the year.

“Last year the school achieved 82 percent in their final exam and this year the school is planning on achieving 100 percent passing rate,” he said.

Mabaso said there is no weekend in their school; the school works 10 days which is seven days of the week, tomorrow, today and yesterday.

“With the Saturday’s classes that school get from Katleho Pele, the pupils are able to achieve good marks and we are grateful for that,” he said.
