City has budget for Soweto roads

City of Johannesburg Mayor Parks Tau has announced a R2 billion budget to fix roads damaged by floods.

With recent heavy rains and floods affecting many families in Soweto the City of Johannesburg’s executive mayor Parks Tau announced a three year project to upgrade highways and byways and roads in Soweto.

The mayor announced that the developments will be done under the them R2 Billion Facelift For Johannesburg Roads.

“We will be spending almost R2-billion on the rebuilding and fixing of road infrastructure in the City and most target area being Soweto and other township which have high number of floods and potholes.

“With this campaign, we aim on alleviating current traffic congestion, lower the cost of doing business and attract investment and refurbish those damaged roads.

“The M1 and M2 highways and the major arteries serving commercial hubs will be the major beneficiaries of this extensive transport upgrade which will take place over a three year period and the Soweto Highway will also receive a R180 million facelift.”

Tau said: “The resurfacing project has been undertaken by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) which is responsible for the provision of quality road infrastructure, effective traffic management, the maintenance of traffic signals and road signs and the upkeep of the storm water system.”

“While we are busy with such developments, we want those affected to be patient with us as we are working hard on solving the matter urgently and in the mean time we do have expert who are out there to assist floods victims.”
