Safety concerns as mobile classes pose a danger

Budget slows down DOE from fixing mobile classes in time.

Mobile classrooms at Julius Sebolai Primary School are in a bad condition.

Broken toilet doors, office and class floors plus the exposed electricity wires are some of the major issues the school is concerned about.

Ward committee member for public safety, Jack Mabaso said the land on which the mobile classes have been put is a wetland.

He said water has been coming out of the ground nonstop.

Mabaso said he asks the department of education to acknowledge the seriousness of the problem and to implement solutions.

“Pupils and teachers at any learning environment should be guaranteed of their safety as this is the department’s duty to do so.

He said” It may be true that DOE did send inspectors to the school and I’m not against that, but what are they doing to address the situation.

SGB chairperson, Theresa Mbokazi said they’ve sent a requisition letter to the department outlining their problems and things that need urgent attention.

“At the moment we are waiting for feedback from the department on measures they plan to implement to better the situation,” said Mbokazi.

Johannesburg West’s district director, Dennis Macuacua said the department is busy refurbishing schools.

School areas currently undergoing renovations include Slovoville and Doornkop.

Macuacua said there is a delay in the renewals because of budget issues.

“We are behind schedule and it’s because we wait for the budget to be announced at the beginning of the financial year in April.

“We urge schools to be patient and to look after the property till all is fixed,” said Macuacua.
