Pupils prey to cellphone vultures

Meadowlands High School pupil stabbed for his cellphone on his way to school.

Most schools discourage pupils from taking their cellphones to schools .

Cellphones are an attraction to thieves who prey on pupils.

Acting principal at Meadowlands High School, George Maluleke, said this is a concern for the school especially after a recent incident where a pupil was stabbed in his left lung by thieves who wanted his cellphone.

Dumezweni Gabela, a Grade 12 pupil, was stabbed on his way to school in February.

He has just recovered and he is back at school.

Maluleke said he always tells pupils not to carry their cellphones to school because thieves know that they carry ‘nice’ phones.

“They end up being preyed on.

“If they have to carry their cell phones to school for a valid reason then they should ensure that they are not exposed for thieves to see,” he said.

Gabela’s teacher, Justin Mambirisi, said he is please to have him back at school.

“We were really scared by what had happened. When I saw blood all over his school uniform I was really touched.

“We thank God for keeping him.”

His friend, Siboniseni Mvelase, said: “When I heard what had happened to him I was shocked and hurt.

“He is not a violent person and is soft spoken,” he said.

His classmates also felt disheartened by the news, they donated money as a gesture of love and support for Gabela who had been away from school and recovering from a stab wound that almost took his life.
