‘Sneak thief of sight’

People with Glaucoma don't know that they have it, get your eyes tested

Glaucoma world week is being commemorated from march 10-14.

Professionals in the optometry field met today at the St John Eye Hospital to raise awareness, talk and exchange ideas about the “thief of sight” as Glaucoma is commonly known.

Dr Susan Williams from St Johns Eye said that Glaucoma is a disease of the optical nerve.

“Glaucoma can’t be treated but it can be prevented from spreading further. People with Glaucoma don’t know that they have the disease. It is common to african descent,” she said.

Williams said that Glaucoma is genetic and it can be transmitted from parents to children.

“It’s very important to go for a check-up because people with glaucoma don’t know that they have it,” she said.
