‘Schools not a dumping ground’

Parents told not to criticise and undermine teachers.

It is easy for people to throw stones from the outside while they do not know the situation on the inside, journalist and volunteer Ray Nxumalo says about problems in schools.

He says the work he has done at Meadowlands High School has been criticised by some people who do not know challenges at schools.

He has been volunteering at the school for years. He says he has been assisting especially with disciplinary issues.

“I decided to roll up my sleeves and do something about issues in schools.

“People throw stones at teachers without them knowing the challenges and problems they have to deal with.

“Parents do not attend parents’ meetings to assess the progress of their children but when they want to complain about something.

“Parents should not use schools as dumping ground from their problem children.”

As a former pupil at the school, he says he is committed to helping out at the school because he believes in Meadowlands High School.

His concerns are that pupils disrespect teachers, they are disobedient and backchat. He says they bunk classes, others are found smoking in toilets, pupils do not wear proper school uniform and they come to school with ‘peacock’ hairstyles.

“When such ill-discipline is reprimanded, teachers are critised,” Nxumalo says.
