Residents up in arms over no electricity

Klipspruit is without electricity for three days and residents are furious.

The Klipspruit community have again taken to the streets venting their frustration on the theft of electricity cables.

“Our electricity has been off for three days now,” Amien Kaldine said.

Security guards were deployed to the place where cables were continuously stolen.

The conditions under which the guards operate are atrocious, according to Kaldine.

“They (security guards) have no shelter and the community provides them with food,” Kaldine said.

Cables were stolen from three different locations thus making it difficult for the guards to secure the area, he said.

The situation in Klipspruit is tense and most roads are closed because of the protest.

Residents took to the streets last night and continued throughout today.

Kaldine says he phoned City Power on numerous occasions since Wednesday evening but has received no help.

“I have three reference numbers and City Power keeps telling me that they will deal with the problem.

“We only saw somebody measuring and claimed to have fixed the cables but we still have no electricity,” Kaldine said.

Residents protested last year too after they had no electricity for three consecutive days.

City Power was not available for comment.
