Residents left destitute after flood

Residents were taken to a safe house after their homes were flooded.

Kliptown residents were woken by flooding in their homes yesterday after heavy rain burst the banks of Klip Rivier.

The water rose to the middle of doors for residents living closer to the river, reaching to the chest of some of the residents.

“All my furniture and electronics are damaged, I could only save my children’s documents and my ID,” said Samuel Mavuso.

Many residents were forced to evacuate while some were stranded in their homes.

“We can’t do anything because our homes are flooded and we can’t get to our houses,” Mavuso said.

Water levels had subsided by the afternoon but it was still difficult for people to access their homes.

The road between Kliptown and Klipspruit was closed as the river was flowing through it.

Residents were taken to a nearby centre for the evening and were supplied with blankets.

“Today we will have to pick up the broken pieces and see where to from here,” said Mavuso.
