Sin tax increase

Whisky drinker will now pay R4.80 more for a bottle.

In his budget speech last Wednesday, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan made sure that South Africans would have to dig deeper in their pockets to pay for alcohol, cigarettes and fuel as he increased sin tax.

“A 340 ml bottle of one favourite cider will cost nine cents more while a packet of 20 cigarettes will set smokers back by 68 cents more.

“A whisky drinker will now pay R4.80 for a bottle, however the duty rate on traditional African beer remains unchanged,” he said.

The minister said the fuel levy is set to increase by a total of 20 cents a litre from April 2.

The minister said that these taxes would take effect immediately.
